BREAKING NEWS: Production Cast Fired...

Excerpts from an e-mail from Dale Alexander, a key grip on NBC's "The Office":

"Our show was shut down and we were all laid off this week. I've been watching the news since the WGA strike was announced and I have yet to see any coverage dedicated to the effect that this strike will have on the below the line employees.

"I respect the WGA's position. They probably do deserve a larger percentage of profit participation, but a lengthy strike will affect more than just the writers and studios. On my show we had 14 writers. There were also 2 cameramen, 2 camera assistants, 4 hair stylists, 4 makeup artists, 7 wardrobe people, 4 grips, 4 electricians, 2 craft service, 4 props people, 6 construction, 1 medic, 3 art department, 5 set dressers, 3 sound men, 3 stand-ins, 2 set PAs, 4 assistant directors, 1 DGA trainee, 1 unit manager, 6 production office personnel, 3 casting people, 4 writers assistants, 1 script supervisor, 2 editors, 2 editors assistants, 3 post production personnel, 1 facilities manager, 8 drivers, 2 location managers, 3 accountants, 4 caterers and a producer who's not a writer. All 102 of us are now out of work.

"I have been in the motion picture business for 33 years and have survived three major strikes. None of which have been by any of the below the line unions. During the 1988 WGA strike many of my friends lost their homes, cars and even spouses. Many actors are publicly backing the writers, some have even said that they would find a way to help pay bills for the striking writers. When the networks run out of new shows and they air repeats the writers will be paid residuals. The lowest paid writer in television makes roughly twice the salary than the below the line crewmember makes. Everyone should be paid their fair share, but does it have to be at the expense of the other 90% of the crewmembers. Nobody ever recoups from a strike, lost wages are just that, lost.

"We all know that the strike will be resolved. Eventually both sides will return to the bargaining table and make a deal. The only uncertainty is how many of our houses, livelihoods, college educations and retirement funds will pay for it."

Ausiello: Jim and Pam are finally happy, so you know what that means: It's time for Karen to put in an appearance! Rashida Jones is due back on the set next week to shoot scenes at Karen's new place of employ. Office producers are currently casting the role of her assistant, a twentysomething metrosexual who is friendly and has a good energy. Meanwhile, I hear new bossman Ryan is also in the market for an assistant — and she's smokin'. According to the casting notice, she's in her early twenties, businesslike, attractive and smart. 4.01 "Fun Run' Recap...

It's been four months since Jim burst in on Pam's confessional in last season's finale in order to ask her out to dinner. In its season premiere, fans of The Office were finally clued in to what happened after that brief conversation. This bit of drama, however, still did not get in the way of the usual antics to be expected from the NBC sitcom. Michael Scott continues to embarrass himself in new ways, Dwight is as horrendously inappropriate as ever, and Toby is still as underappreciated as Creed is creepy.

In the beginning of the episode we are treated to a snapshot of Michael's personal life. His former boss, Jan, has moved in with him and is still unemployed. Then, like he has so many times before, Michael reflects on his personal life to the camera during his morning drive to the office. This potential life lesson is cut short, however, when he inadvertently strikes one of his employees, Meredith, with his car in the Dunder-Mifflin parking lot.

As we enter the building for the first time of the season, Jim recaps what has transpired during the months we missed. He and Karen have broken up and, despite her insistence on continuing her career, she has mysteriously vanished. He and Pam are getting together quite well and Pam mentions how happy she is to have her friend back. Both employees insist that they are single and not dating anyone, but certain staff members, namely the immature Kevin, have their suspicions.

Michael soon announces to the rest of his staff the tragedy that he has caused. As the rest of the staff express both concern for Meredith and awe at Michael's actions, Dwight attempts to comfort his mentor. Michael is then forced to call his new boss, Ryan, who also happens to be his former intern.

Meanwhile, Pam tries to rally the staff to visit Meredith in the hospital. As she tries to recruit the aid of Angela, she learns that Angela's cat, Sprinkles, is sick and needs tending to. Pam, while dodging a series of awkward questions from Kevin, reminds Angela of her professional duty as head of the party planning committee and convinces her to take the lead in arranging the hospital visit. Angela is then forced to send her secret boyfriend, Dwight, to her home to take care of the sick Sprinkles.

Michael invites himself to the hospital along with the staff and Meredith soon awakes to an awkward gathering of her co-workers. After Michael attempts to milk an apology from the injured employee and Creed quizzes her about what pain medications she is taking, the staff leaves at Meredith's insistence.

Back at the office, a barely sympathetic Dwight informs Angela that her cat has died and is currently being kept in the freezer to prevent it from smelling. This news prompts Michael to believe that the building is cursed so he quickly holds a staff meeting to address this latest dilemma. As should be expected, Michael quickly steers the meeting towards the direction of the most inappropriate of subjects, asking the staff about their religious beliefs and making sure no one has performed any sacrilegious rituals that may lead to the newfound curse upon the building.

After the meeting we see Pam heading out the building as Kevin hides in his car, hoping to find evidence proving the secret relationship between Jim and Pam. After seeing her drive off alone in her car, however, he gives up and heads back to the building, seemingly accepting that his hunches were wrong after all.

Fortunately for us, the camera crew is a little more persistent and follows Pam down the street where she discreetly pulls over to let an enthusiastic Jim run into the car and greet her with a kiss. Soon after, the camera crew presents their incriminating footage to the secret couple and Pam, with some restrained glee, admits that they are dating but have not told anyone.

Meanwhile, Angela confides in Pam her suspicion that Dwight may have killed her cat. Apparently the cat was found in the freezer, as Dwight had said, but the contents of the freezer were covered with claw marks showing signs of a possible struggle. Angela tries to turn to Pam for support but quickly dismisses her after Pam claims to be a “dog person.”

Dwight, who had missed the initial hospital visit to take care of Angela's cat, then goes to the hospital to visit Meredith. He discovers that Meredith was actually infected with rabies and she was lucky to be admitted to the hospital before she showed any symptoms. Dwight brings this news back to his boss and Michael decides to hold a fundraiser in the form of a 5K Fun Run in order to raise money for the research and treatment of rabies.

The fundraiser is quickly on its way as Michael has his employees raise funds over the phone as he Jim, Dwight and Pam plan the race. After raising $700, Michael spends $200 of it creating a giant check and another $260 on a stripper dressed as a nurse to receive the giant check in the opening ceremony.

Soon, the race begins. Michael, after scarfing down a fettuccini alfredo right before the race in order to carbo-load, is off to a quick start but eventually slows down due to his full stomach and his refusal to drink water throughout the day. Dwight eventually admits to killing Angela's cat, claiming that it was out of mercy and, as a farmer, he grew up with the belief that putting an animal out of its misery was the noble thing to do. Jim and Pam intentionally fall behind deciding to use the race as an opportunity to spend some private time together, walking through the neighborhoods and visiting a garage sale. Toby ends up being the strong winner but finds little reception at the finish line where Kelly is too busy texting her friends to congratulate him.

In the end, Michael finds himself unable to finish the race until Jim and Pam finally make their way to him and manage to deliver a timely pep talk, giving him the motivation to finish the race before promptly vomiting on the finish line. He is eventually admitted to the hospital with a case of dehydration where he is able to make amends with Meredith

The season premier proved that The Office shows no sign of running out of comedic material and has the potential to continue as one of the cleverest comedies on air. However, with the fairly anti-climactic resolution to the Jim/Pam relationship, it seems that the flirtatious glances and inside jokes that made the two so fun and adorable as friends apparently make them somewhat annoying as a couple. The show will likely continue to be as funny and witty as it ever has been, but without the “will they, won't they” drama of the previous seasons, can it remain as addictive week to week as it was before?

First Conference in October...

Next month, the very first convention for NBC's The Office will be held in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where the Emmy award-winning comedy series is set. Although the show is actually filmed in Los Angeles, it has made numerous references to the “Electric City.”

The Office, which centers on the employees of a fictional paper company in Scranton, has had a huge impact on the city. Many locals religiously follow the series, and last December, flocked to the Mall of Steamtown to meet Emmy nominee Rainn Wilson, who plays Dwight Schrute in the series.

In May, Scranton locals welcomed more actors from the show, namely Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin) and Brian Baumgartner (Kevin Malone), both of whom expressed their delight for having gotten the opportunity to visit the city.

"I love Scranton. I love it. Everybody knows everybody,” Kinsey said.

"It's great to be [in Scranton] and see the places we've discussed on the show. Poor Richards and Farleys, the hotel and the Rad,” Baumgartner said.

The Office producers have even enlisted the help of the residents in procuring items from the city that can be used in the show.

Although the network and convention organizers have yet to confirm the appearance of the show's stars in the upcoming convention, NBC news said that Al Roker, The Today Show's resident weatherman, will be kicking off the convention by forecasting from the University of Scranton.

On Tuesday, September 11, convention organizers gathered at the Radisson at Lackawanna Station hotel, urging local businesses and residents to take part in the event.

The three-day convention will be held on October 26 to 28, giving all attendees the chance to mingle and participate in various Office-themed events. For more information, log on to www.theofficeconvention.com.

Meanwhile, fans will be able to catch new episodes of The Office when the fourth season begins airing on Thursday, September 27, at 9pm on NBC.

Now reporting this makes me sad, because Jenna is a favorite around here. The Office cutie Jenna Fischer and her screenwriter/director husband James Gunn have announced the end of their six-year marriage. In a statement posted on their respective MySpace pages, they share, "We are sorry for any pain this causes family and friends. The enthusiasm we have expressed for each other's lives, spirits and careers is real — we have been each other's cheerleader and friend... and continue to be so now and in the future."

Knowing how this Internet thing can be, the couple adds, "You might be tempted to make one of us 'feel better' by putting the other one down in a [message board] post. Please don't. We still have the utmost respect for one another, and we'd have to delete you."

Gunn directed his wife in the campy horror hit Slither.

Actor talks about becoming Regular...

Ed Helms, who plays Andy Bernard, has earned his spot on The Office, starting off as a recurring actor on season 3 and officially promoted as a regular cast member by the end of the year. Although becoming a series regular was something he aspired toward, the 33-year-old actor reveals that he remained unassuming so as not to get his hopes up.

“I certainly harbored hope that it would continue. But I didn't have any illusions. When I first started it was an eight-episode arc and it just sort of kept going. It wasn't until we figured out a contract to become a series regular that I allowed myself the excitement - the ability to really embrace it and be excited about it,” Helms told IGN.

Helms, who catapulted to fame as a correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, gets the essence of his suck-up character on The Office from various people he encountered over the years.

“I think that Andy is just an amalgam of people that have annoyed me over the years. I've tried to do a sort of armchair psychoanalysis of those people and then take that analysis and insert them into Andy. It's incredibly fun to play someone that you don't like. It exorcises your own demons in a way. It's cathartic. We all have things that we don't like about ourselves, little things. And I get to amplify those things and put them out there. It's fun and it has a cleansing effect,” he explained.

Helms considers himself as a comedic actor on The Office, while on The Daily Show, he worked as a correspondent. Despite the differences, he finds great pleasure in being part of the NBC comedy.

“I think it's a rare treat that a lot of actors don't experience. At The Daily Show it was very different, because I was playing a heightened version of myself on TV and I was a very active participant in everything that was getting on the air…and it was about real stuff… we were covering real events. This is obviously all fiction. It's a totally different approach, but they're both really fun. What I miss about The Daily Show is feeling like when you're knocking the wind out of hypocrisy in a way. Not that we had some mission statement, but it was fun to be a part of satire, because we made something that resonated with all of us. This is every bit as fun, if not more somewhat, but for very different reason. This is the "craft of acting" if you will,' he added.

The Office season 4 premieres on Thursday, September 27 on NBC.

Some fans of NBC's The Office have refused to believe that what happened in the season ender actually happened. They think that other fans are misinterpreting the last scene, that Ryan wasn't actually promoted at Dunder-Mifflin. But now there's official proof that he got the job.

DunderMifflinPaper.com has the official press release about Ryan's promotion. His new title is Vice President of Regional Sales, and he will be based out of New York City.

Ryan says that he wants to "shake up things," because "the whole concept of a paper company in today's paperless world is fundamentally flawed. I plan to take bold steps and initiate enormous reforms to bring this company back to financial viability." Sounds like he's going to put his Master's to good use.

In case you didn't know, Craig Robinson, who plays warehouse foreman Darryl Philbin on The Office, is currently starring in a new web series called Mr. Robinson's Driving School, which is broadcast on MSN and heavily financed by Volvo.

Mr. Robinson's Driving School features the Office actor as he proves that he's the best driving instructor in town. The series includes some interactivity for viewers such as a driving lessons game and a chance to leave voicemails that may be used in future episodes.
Reveille, a television production company, came up with the concept for the web series and took it to MSN, which pitched the idea to Volvo, a long-term advertising partner typically attracted to innovative online marketing campaigns. Consequently, Volvo signed up to finance the show, using it as the primary marketing tool for its new C30 four-seat hatchback, which targets a younger market compared to other Volvo vehicles.

"MSN put Reveille and Volvo together and we jointly developed the concept and the show," Howard Owens, managing director at Reveille, said. "The car is integral to Craig's mission and his heroic journey, and that journey is ultimately to prove he's the best driving instructor in town. It made sense that his sidekick would be his car."

"I think the whole notion of an online comedy backed by arguably the hottest production company with an actor from The Office and a very cool car gives us the right ingredients for the series to be quite buzzworthy," John Maloney, vice-president marketing communications for Volvo Cars of North America, said.

Despite Volvo's deep involvement in the web series, the show doesn't come off like an advertisement, according to Owen.

"It still feels to us like it's a very funny and smart show, and I think Craig feels the same way," he said. "We don't feel like it's a commercial."

Mr. Robinson's Driving School, which premiered three episodes yesterday, will be followed by a new episode every week for thirteen weeks.

Although the Office creator considered hiring her to play the plum part, when asked about it at press tour, he acknowledged that her status as a TV legend might prove a distraction for viewers. "The thing I'm a little worried about," he said, "is she's so famous."

Jenna Fischer returns despite injury...

It's back to work for the people of The Office, including actress Jenna Fischer, who fractured her back in four places almost three months ago.

The 33-year-old Emmy nominee was at a party in New York in May, when, on her way to the dance floor, she slipped and fell on a marble staircase. Her doctor gave her 12 weeks to fully recover, and although she is still suffering, Jenna Fischer returned to work with the rest of The Office cast on Monday.

“I'm still sore. I have good days and so-so days. I'm definitely able to work,” she told People magazine. “Truthfully, I'm not in a lot of pain anymore. It's more some discomfort. I don't have a headache, but I would say it's comparable to having a low-grade headache."

In The Office, Fischer plays Pam Beesly, Dunder-Mifflin-Scranton's receptionist. Her role has her sitting behind a computer most of the time, which bodes well for her given her still sore back.

"They got a variety of chairs for me,” Jenna Fischer said. “I had to sit in, I think, six different chairs, and got to pick my favorite one.”

Prior to their first day back at work, the cast participated in a read-through of the show's first script for the fourth season. Kate Flannery, who plays Meredith Palmer on the comedy series, told People that she is convinced Fischer is recuperating well.

"She's slowly healing, and I think she's going to be fine,” Flannery said.

Nevertheless, Fischer acknowledges that she has a way to go to full recovery.

"I'm not allowed to start physical therapy yet. The bones have to completely heal first. I start physical therapy in about three weeks,” she said. "There are little things all the time that I don't realize I can't do until I try to do them, like parallel-park my car. It's the twisting behind me. It's certain muscles that you're not sure about yet. I'm just going to try to roll with it. Everyone is so supportive and concerned. I know it's going to be OK."

Get ready for longer hours at The Office.

NBC announced on July 16 that the fourth season premiere episode of the hit series would be an hour long. Later that day, executive producer Greg Daniels proclaimed that the series would run long for its first four weeks back on the air, filling up four of the five extra half-hours on the fall schedule. The production of longer episodes is in accordance with NBC's plan to lessen reruns on the network.

"It was their request," Daniels said of the scheduling.

The hour-long episodes will have The Office competing against hit shows from other networks, including ABC's Grey's Anatomy and CBS' CSI:Crime Scene Investigation. The set of extended episodes will also serve as a filler for Scrubs, which the network won't premiere until October 25.

It was during the May upfront presentations that NBC first revealed its plans about producing longer episodes. The network also said that the extended episodes are part of its efforts to decrease the number of repeats throughout the season. Similar to the show's previous run, original episodes of The Office's fourth edition will air for 25 weeks of the season.

According to Daniels, the beginning of the new season will deal with the events that unfolded in the third season's final episodes, including the termination of Jan (Melora Hardin) and Ryan's (B.J. Novak) promotion.

"We're dealing with Ryan being the boss and trying to shake things up and bringing the company more into the Internet age," Daniels said last month. "That's the main thing at the beginning. And also Jan living with Michael -- she's moved in."

The executive producer also had something to say about Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam's (Jenna Fischer) relationship in the upcoming season.

"That's a big part of the show. I think you can look for some new things happening," he said, refusing to say whether or not the two will finally get together.

“I think [Jim and Pam together] would be interesting! …But I won't answer. I'm willing to be coy with all these things!” he said.

The fourth season of The Office will premiere on September 27 on NBC.

"I think we're going to find out where she went," he says, "because she didn't get to say her piece. I think she'll come back, slap everyone in the face and then be done — it'll be glorious!" Regarding Jam, Krasinski says he hopes this season will find the star-crossed lovers enjoying all the ups and downs of coupledom. "I think it would be interesting to see, after all that pressure, what a relationship would be like. I feel like there would be some sort of awkwardness because there is a lot of pressure, and I think both those characters would feel that. There's a lot of fun you could have with it."

It's very, very rare that a half-hour comedy will make fans legitimately care about where the story is going to go coming into a new season. The Office is one of those rare shows. Not only is it the funniest show on TV (when Curb Your Enthusiasm returns, we'll talk), its plot lines, and cliffhangers between seasons, are truly meaningful to fans. So, when executive producer Greg Daniels spoke to press late last week and gave some hints about what's to come on season four of The Office, fans listened. Thanks to IGN, here are the major nuggets of info regarding the upcoming season of The Office.

* Daniels, on Jim and Pam: "That's a big part of the show. I think you can look for some new things happening." He continued, when asked if audiences might finally get to see them actually, you know, together: "I think that would be interesting! …But I won't answer. I'm willing to be coy with all these things!"

* Although Rashida Jones (who plays Karen), has a new sitcom on FOX (Rules for Starting Over), she will appear in a few episodes this season. When those episodes will be remains unclear.

* Roy is no longer a main character on the show, but we may see him turn up at some point. Jan remains a main cast member.

* They have not finalized any guest stars as of yet.

* Daniels, on how season three ended, with Jim returning from New York to ask Pam out: "Well, I thought it was a great ending to that episode. I think you want to be a little bit ahead of people's expectations, and not give them exactly what they're expecting to get, but still give them something satisfying, because it engages the dynamics that they're interested in. But I would think it would be a shame if everybody knew what was going to happen with the next episode and then got it."

The Office will premiere its fourth season September 27 on NBC.

NBC Press Tour...

The Office: Rashida Jones, aka Karen Filipelli, will be back this fall. Greg Daniels and company were able to work out a deal where she’ll show up for at least an episode or two when The Office returns this fall.

Jenna is doing fine, though still recovering from her May injury, and will most definitely be sitting behind the reception desk at Dunder-Mifflin come September, but the producers may have to go easy on her the first few episodes. Says Daniels, “Luckily Pam sits a lot on the show.”

We’ve seen the last of David Denman, aka Roy, for the time being, since he’s been fired and is no longer dating Pam. However, he’s not dead and, according to Greg, could return at any time.

We will see more of Ryan this season! There will be great stuff between Michael and Ryan, now that Ryan’s the boss. But sadly for Kelly, things between her and Ryan are not going well.

Jan really is moving into Michael’s condo, and when I asked if she’ll be wearing stretch pants, Greg Daniels was kind enough to confirm.

The hourlong episodes (announced earlier this year) will be the first four of the season, probably because Scrubs won’t be on yet.

The season-three DVD drops Sept. 4, and Daniels says they overproduce so much, there will be about five or six hours of extras on it.
